De steam crane (road engine).
Another
type of road engine is the steam crane.
The crane engine, cou ld
be described as a roadloco
equipped with a jig and was used on shipyards, constructionworks,
sawmills etc.
In many cases the jig is removable and than the engine could
be used as an ordinary road loco.
On old photographs you see them often used in sawmills to hoist
the trees on the sawbench.
Pictures made on shipyards show the importance to help the workers
in transporting heavy loads. Before the crane engine was developed
only cranes on rails, so a partially “fixed” move
was available and muscleforce! The strong point of the crane
engine is its mobile application.
Sometimes you can see them on steamrallies.
